    Description

    BY 1975 the NH County System of license plates had broken down as the southern counties grew beyond the number of available county letter number combinations and the DMV started issuing northern county plates to southern county registrants. As a result, the state decided to abandon the county system and go back to straight numbers. As the new plates were to be reflectorized retooling was necessary. To free up machines, existing 75 plates were to be renewed with stickers until the new plates were ready. In the interim new registrants were to be given a series of plates that were issued as singles only. These plates were still in the county format of 2 letters and up to 4 numbers. The letter "X" which had never been used as a county letter, now became the initial letter for this series. The first of this series was issued in Dec. 77 when the supply of 75 plates ran out. The plates as first manufactured had red characters on a white background. In addition as they were issued as singles, both stickers were applied to the single plate. By April of 1978 so much confusion occured due to the single plate and the colors, the State decided to recall all the then unissued interim series and over paint the red with the more traditional NH green.This tag is one of those manufactured near the end of the series and was never red. 79 NH INTERIM Tag, USED Very Good Condition.
